Taste and Aroma: Alum Powder is not used for its flavor, but for its chemical properties in pickling and baking.
Uses: Pickling, baking and as a preservative. The main reason pickles are crispy! Use roughly one ounce of alum powder per gallon of water when pickling. **This alum powder cannot be used to grow crystals.**
Substitutes: Pickling Spice,Calcium Chloride Food Grade, Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Powder, Cream Of Tartar, Arrowroot Powder and Citric Acid.
Fun Fact: During the roaring twenties Alum Powder was often used in comedy acts, causing performers to pucker their lips in a comedic fashion.
